13 quotes from Star Wars to motivate your students

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… teachers were trying to give important lessons to their students.

Here are a few lessons from Star Wars to use in your classroom.

13 quotes from Star Wars that will inspire your students

1. “Do or do not, there is no try.” – Yoda

This is a great way to tell your students that they’ve got to commit, go all in, and go for it. Whether they succeed or fail doesn’t matter – either they’re going to do something, or they’re not.

2. “Never tell me the odds.” – Han Solo

This is a great one for when students are feeling discouraged. Just because something is difficult, doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

You determine your own success. Believe in yourself, always!

3. “Who’s more foolish? The fool or the one who follows him?” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

This is a great reminder about peer pressure, and that students don’t need to follow along with what everyone else is doing.

Stand up for what you believe in!

4. “Patience you must have, my young Padawan.” – Yoda

Use this when students get frustrated when they “can’t do it”. Remind them that they have to be patient with their learning. Patience, perseverance, and determination are key!

5. “Your focus determines your reality.” – Qui-Gon Jinn

This one is a great mini-pep talk to encourage students to stay positive or remind them that they’re in control of how they respond to situations, and can get through anything with the right mindset.

You can focus on the positive, or the negative. What you choose to focus on influences your reality.

6. “In my experience, there’s no such thing as luck.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

This is a great reminder for your students that hard work pays off – sitting around waiting for something to happen by chance does not.

Your determination and effort will get you to the finish line.

7. “Size matters not.” – Yoda

A writer named Mark Twain once said, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog.”

No matter who you are or where you’ve come from, you can achieve great things! What’s in your heart and head can almost always overcome your physical limits.

8. “This is a new day, a new beginning.” – Ahsoka Tano

We don’t want to state the obvious (but we’re going to): every day is a fresh start, a clean slate, and brings new opportunities!

9. “Your eyes deceive you, don’t trust them.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

Never judge a book by its cover – sometimes, what needs to be seen isn’t always on the surface.

10. “The ability to speak does not make you intelligent.” – Qui-Gon Jinn

This is another way of saying, “A wise man speaks because he has something to say, a fool speaks because he has to say something.”

Watch your words, and use them to contribute positively.

11. “All mentors have a way of seeing more of our faults than we would like. It’s the only way we grow.” – Padme Amidala

This a way of saying to your students: “Sometimes we teachers forget to point out the good parts of your work to show you where you went wrong. (Sorry about it.) We’re just trying to help you grow and learn!”

12. "Strike me down, and I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine." – Obi-Wan Kenobi

Turns out Obi-Wan was big on growth mindset, too. He's acknowledging that sometimes we have to fail before we can do something great.

Napoleon Hill said, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with is the seed of an equal or greater benefit”. Defeat and loss is not the end – it’s a stepping stone for you to start again and try something bigger and better.

13. “Always pass on what you have learned.” – Yoda

Teaching others what you’ve learned is a great way to retain your new knowledge.

Show your classmates how it’s done!

That's it – may the force be with you!
